Q4033: How can I manage AvantGo hot syncs better, since they take so long?

If you only subscribe to one or two AvantGo channels, your hot sync time should not be too bad. But once you get up to 3 or 4 or more channels, your hot sync time will increase noticeably, especially if the channels are large.

The main thing to understand is that you do not need to hot sync your AvantGo channels every time you hot sync your Palm. In other words, you can set the default action to do nothing, and then only turn on the AvantGo hot sync when you want to.

NOTE: Depending on what version of AvantGo you have, your conduit may be called "AvantGo" or it may be called "MobileLink". These instructions use the name "MobileLink".

To do this, start up the hot sync program (you may be able to do this by just starting Palm Desktop). Find the red and blue MobileLink icon in the system tray:

MobileLink

  1. Right click on that icon and select "Custom":

  2. This will give you a list of the conduits that have been setup on your PC (similar to the above image). Find "MobileLink" in the list, highlight it, and click the "Change" button.

  3. Select the "Do nothing" option and also click the 'Set as default' checkbox. Then click "OK". Now, when you hot sync, AvantGo will not be sync'd.

Anytime you really want to sync AvantGo, just follow the above steps, except in step 3, select "Synchronize the files" but do NOT click on "Set as default". Then do a hot sync. I find myself doing this about once per day (so AvantGo is only synchronized once daily) even if I actually hot sync many times.
