Q4020: How can I setup my e-mail program to use my own domain name in my e-mail address?

These instructions address a very specific situation for customers of smcNet, but the information may also be helpful to other internet users who own their own domain name. First of all, for purposes of this explanation, let's assume the following example:

Barney Rubble has a standard internet access account with his local provider. His e-mail address is barney402@myisp.com. Barney also owns his own domain name (rubble.com), and perhaps has a web site there for his company. He uses the address barney@rubble.com on the web site, which simply forwards all mail to his existing e-mail account.

The problem is that when Barney sends e-mail, it shows that it's from barney402@myisp.com but he wants it to show that it's from barney@rubble.com; after all, he's paying for his own domain name. And if he can change it, then the recipients of his e-mail messages will see his domain name and perhaps visit his web site.

This is a very simple issue to fix for most people. If Barney is using AOL, then he's SOL. But if Barney is using most any other internet provider, then all he needs to do is go into the setup of his e-mail program, and change his return e-mail address; no other settings need to be changed.

Eudora Pro

  1. Click on the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Options".
  3. Click on the "Getting Started" icon under the Category heading.
  4. Enter the e-mail address barney@rubble.com in the "Return address" field.
Eudora

Outlook Express

  1. Click on the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Accounts".
  3. Click on the "Mail" tab.
  4. Double-click on your mail account (most people only have one listed).
  5. Click on the "General" tab.
  6. Enter the e-mail address barney@rubble.com in the "E-mail address" field.
Outlook Express

Here's the "Servers" tab for reference purposes:

That's it. Now, when Barney sends e-mail, it will show that it's from barney@rubble.com, and if the recipient clicks "Reply" to send a message back to Barney, it will also go to this same address.
